Translation Software

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does L & H translation software work exactly?

Answer: The current software translates 5 languages to and from English

If you can get text into your computer in a readable form, you can translate it. It is also possible to install a translate button in Microsoft Word or Wordperfect so that translations can be done inside those programs. This option is available when you install the translation software.

Email can also be translated, most conveniently with Version 7.0. Copy and Paste can also be used to move text into and out of the translation programs. The translation can be done on text of any size, including words, sentences or entire documents. The speed of translation is about 1 page per minute.

2. There are several versions of the L & H (Globalink) Software. Which one is best?

Answer: The best software for your purposes depends on the nature of your application. It also depends on how many languages you want to translate. At the present time, we have 2 basic versions of the software with a number of important differences. However the differences are not so much related to the quality of the translation but are due to the number of languages and the presence or absence of other features, such as the translation of web pages.

The most recent versions are "Simply Translating" and Power Translator Version 7.0. Both have 5 languages, to and from English. The languages are Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese.

The difference between "Simply Translating" and Power Translator version 7.0 is that version 7.0 has some extra features such as specialized subject dictionaries for certain specialized fields, a utility for translating email and a utility for translating web pages. Both versions are capable of integrating with the latest versions of Microsoft Word.

3. In what situations would I want something other than Power Translator Version 7.0?

Answer: If cost is a critical factor in your choice, then you should consider "Simply Translating". If you are not fluent in English, you should consider a "localized" version of Power Translator Version 6.4. Localized versions have the menu and instructions in the native language of the user. Please contact us to get the product code unique to your language.

4. Is there any software for the MAC?

No, all the MAC software has been sold and nothing else is planned. It is possible to run the Windows 95 translation software on the MAC if you have a PC emulation card or software that emulates Windows 95 or Windows 98.

5. What file formats are supported by the software?

Answer: A wide range of file formats are supported. These include Rich Text Format, ASCII, Microsoft Word and Wordperfect. Version 6.4 and 7.0 will also translate HTML formats and most email formats. We have never encountered a format that could not be translated, except that the Language Assistant will not translate HTML (web page) format.

6. What do you recommend for MAC owners?

Answer: Because software designed for the MAC is no longer available, we recommend using the PC emulation software that is available for the MAC. With the emulation software, you can run these Windows 95/98 translation programs.

7. Will the software work with Windows 2000?

Answer: Yes.

8. What is the quality of translation?

Answer: The software produces understandable translations, but most of the time the translation is not perfect. Whether the quality is acceptable depends on the nature of your work. More than 98% of buyers are satisfied with the software and there are very few returns, even though there is a money back guarantee. If your goal is to translate a novel into another language for publication, then the software is not adequate to produce a final version. But if you need to understand the needs of a customer who sends you email in a language that you don't understand, then the software performs very well in that application.

9. Can I scan text into the computer and translate it?

Answer: Yes. However if the scanning produces trash characters in the text, you may have to clean those up first. The software will usually ignore characters that it does not recognize, but if a word has a flaw or misspelling, it can produce errors in the translation. Flaws or trash characters outside of the main body of text are simply ignored by the software. In general, the software can translate words that you recognize as words on the computer screen. Of course correct spelling is necessary.

10. What about other language pairs? Do you have anything to translate between languges other than English?

Answer: There is an French/German version, to and from those languages, but the software is only available in Europe. We cannot sell it.

11. Is there a version of your software available for multiple users on networks?

Answer: Yes, for more information call us at 702-565-1287. But please note that in conversations with the manufacturer, they recommended individual installations rather than the network approach. We can sell license agreements to allow use of the software on multiple computers.

12. Do you ship outside of the United States?

Answer: Yes. We prefer to ship by International Express Mail to those countries that have reliable mail service. The cost is approximately $30. We can also ship by Federal Express. The cost of shipping by Federal Express is about $50 to Europe and $50 to $90 to South America.
